Konomi

Konomi, Japanese for “choice,” is a faith-based mentoring program for youth (ages 10-18).

Developing self-esteem and becoming more responsible happens one step at a time. When youth willingly spend time at Konomi they have the opportunity to develop these characteristics and much more.

“There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man.” — Winston Churchill

We have a heart for disadvantaged and at-risk youth. At Konomi, we want youth to see that they are loved children of God and that their current situation doesn’t have to be their future—they have a choice.

Why horses?

Horses are a special part of God’s creation that provide a way to demonstrate unconditional love, build self- confidence and establish self-worth. Youth who participate in Konomi can experience gaining acceptance from a creature that doesn’t look at skin color, physical features, or social status. Youth also have the opportunity to gain confidence as they learn to control a 1,200-pound animal and earn its trust.

What happens at Konomi?

During a typical 90-minute session, youth will spend around 30 minutes doing chores that may include cleaning stalls, oiling saddles or throwing hay. While our goal is to offer sessions without any financial obligation, we also understand it is important for Konomi youth to have some ownership in their experience. For some, the sense of pride in a job well done is the most powerful part of their time at Konomi.

After chores, youth are partnered, one-on-one, with a loving mentor (who is also an experienced horseman) that has chosen to share their love for Christ by volunteering at Konomi. Youth may see the next hour as a riding lesson, but our ultimate goal is to provide life lessons.

Why faith-based?

At Konomi, our faith is lived not preached. Through our actions, we hope Konomi youth may see Christ reflected in us and realize there may be more to life than their current situation. We hope they will realize they have a choice about their future.

Why support Konomi?

Konomi could be an opportunity to change not just a life, but a legacy. Your support can help break the cycle of abuse, neglect or poverty and promote positive changes for years to come, which could carry on to future generations—and even into eternity. We are hoping that Konomi will be a place for youth who are crying, “Know me!” to come and hear a still, small voice inviting, “Come, know Me.”

Support Konomi

There certainly are operational expenses associated with providing these programs. Although the benefits are much greater than the cost, the reality is that disadvantaged/at-risk youth often come from families that are already struggling financially. With this in mind, HorsePower has established a scholarship fund that would allow us to open our doors and offer Konomi at no cost to the youth or their families.
